I’ve been a big guy all my life – ever since I was a kid I was big. I was fairly active, but no matter what I did my waistline kept increasing. I’m 38 now, and I think back to my late teens and 20s and realize how much I missed out being social and doing things with others because of my weight. If you think packing around extra weight is a pain, it pales in comparison with the low self-confidence that goes along with it.
Eating Less and Exercising More Is Not Sustainable
It’s not like I didn’t try to lose weight – oh I must have tried almost every diet there was out there, and then some. Oh I lost some weight, but within a year it would all be back – and then some. All these calorie restricting diets just failed in the long run because I couldn’t stand it anymore. I was starving – and eventually I’d break down and be right back in the old habits again. It was clear to me that calorie restricted diets weren’t going to work for me. After all, even though I was a big guy, I was still getting out and about. It wasn’t unusual to find me walking 5+ miles a day. You simply cannot eat 1,200 calories worth of food and remain active. Your body isn’t going to allow that! You can do it for a little while, but eventually you’ll break down and you’ll eat everything in sight – which I did!
All these calorie restricting diets just failed in the long run because I couldn’t stand it anymore. I was starving – and eventually I’d break down and be right back in the old habits again.
So how big I was? At my worst I was 360lbs and wore a size 48 waist. I am 6’ tall so there were no excuses about it being “my height”. Something had to change, I felt absolutely awful and didn’t want to socialize or be around anyone anymore.
Around November of 2011 I happened to get an e-mail from Jonathan about a book he was writing and wanting to know if he could send me a copy to review for Amazon. I had always been an active Amazon reviewer so it wasn’t unusual to get these types of requests, so I obliged. As luck would have it I got the book right when I was going on a business trip so I had plenty of time on the plane and in the hotel room to read it. It took me 2 days to finish it, and looking in the mirror, deciding what the heck – the research was solid, and it wasn’t a “diet” per say, so I might as well try it out.

Fast forward to July 2012, and almost 9 months to the date when I read his book. The change has been phenomenal – I have lost 100lbs and am now down to a size 38 waist. For the first time in my life I am throwing away clothes because they are just too big! Even my friends and family can’t believe what they are seeing. Heck, I can’t believe it either!
How To Lose 100 Pounds While Eating A Lot
What makes it work – at least for me – is that I can eat. I don’t have to go around counting every calorie; when I am hungry, I eat! If I am hungry 10 times a day, I eat 10 times a day! The difference is I am eating the right stuff – instead of the sugar and starch overload I used to shove into my mouth every day. Plus I am now packing in the protein – I will go out of my way to find food items with a high protein count. I honestly believe it is the protein, along with greatly reducing (not 100% eliminating) the starches and sugars that has produced these results.
If I am hungry 10 times a day, I eat 10 times a day! The difference is I am eating the right stuff.
It’s Not Just Another Diet
Some people have asked me, “Well isn’t that just the Atkins diet?” My answer has been a resounding “NO!” I tried Atkins, and I was pretty much to the point of throwing up. I could not eat all that meat! I do not like red meat to begin with, and it felt like on Atkins I was doing nothing but shoving meat into my body non-stop. No vegetables? I may be a big guy, but I love vegetables! I tried Atkins for a month before I said enough was enough – I couldn’t take it anymore!
With the Smarter Science of Slim Jonathan didn’t preach about some diet and “you must do this and you must do that”. He laid out the research, made some suggestions, and let people put the answers together for themselves. He even said that eating starches and processed carbs is OK now and then, but don’t make it your main dietary staple. There is nothing you enjoy today that you can’t eat – but you just need to realize how it all balances out. That’s where the book helps!

How To Keep Weight Off Easily
My goal is to get to 200lbs even and wear a size 34 waist. I have no doubt in the next 6 months to a year I will be able to achieve that. I’m not hungry anymore, and the weight is staying off. I’ve also noticed that even on days when I feel like being naughty I usually don’t feel like going crazy. I can really tell that my body is readjusting itself! When you look at a piece of stuffed crust pizza, something I used to love, and go “Yeah, it looks OK, but man all that bread… Yuck!” you know something has changed!
